#iononviaggiosolo: the show for world refugee day

A year has passed since the launch of Io Non Viaggio Solo – a psycho-social support project aimed at Unaccompanied Foreign Minors and young people in the Crotone area, carried out in collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages. On the occasion of World Refugee Day on June 20th, an artistic installation titled “Beyond the Mirror” was created. An interactive installation, depicting some of the young people we met during this first year of the project. The mirrored panels gave the public the opportunity to take a first, small step towards the other: by mirroring themselves, in fact, the observer is no longer a simple spectator, but becomes the author and an integral part of the work itself. A step beyond and beyond the simple concept of a migrant. Because Beyond the Mirror there are dreams, hopes, passions; there are people.

On the afternoon of June 20th, the show “A Story for Every Mirror” was staged, in two performances. It was decided to bring the installations to life, which, through two actors, were able to tell their stories, expectations, dreams and projects in the voices of the unaccompanied foreign minors:

– “I would like to learn how to make pizza here in Italy and I would like to go back home to teach my mom how to do it”
– “I would like to become an eye doctor because I feel sorry for those who can’t see. It reminds me of the blind man who lived in my village”
– “I would like to learn many languages. We are all Gambia, Mali, Egypt, Pakistan… and I like that. I know 5 languages!”

We told the audience about stories, rights and what makes us feel good, leaving them with a question: “Tell us about a small, great thing that makes you feel good too”. We received many answers. Here are some of them: independence, my children’s smiles, an elderly person’s cheerfulness, feeling free from thoughts, my cat Romeo, being helpful to others, sunsets, my grandmother’s hug, simple people, when my baby runs to hug me, dawn.
