The etymology of the Italian word for “health” (“salute”) takes us back to the concepts of salvation and safety, on an individual and a collective level. Since the beginning of its history, theatre has been for SCT – as it was in ancient Greece – a practice of healing and promoting health. Theatre arrives inside hospitals, it gets to nursing homes, among patients, carers and caregivers – in extreme situations such as at the end of life or in chronic ones – or to places of life (schools, work places, squares), where the present and future well-being of adolescents, youth, women and adults can be promoted. SCT Centre immediately builds long-lasting collaborations with healthcare professionals looking for innovative practices to improve the relationship with patients and to feel good as carers: see the collaboration with the nursing and medicine degree courses and with DoRS – the Centre of Health Promotion of the Piedmont Region.
After the first two key projects, Lo splendore dell’età (2004-2012) and Sotto il segno del Cancro (2006-2009), which since the beginning have characterized the history of the association and, in general, of social theatre in Italy, many other works in these twenty years have addressed issues related to health: we go from Postale della salute to Art and Healthcare, the first European project that won the SCT of the Grundtvig EU Programme; from Co-Health to Albergo della Luce and Sopra 60 – La vita che dura, up to the most recent Caring Project – with the show Arte Bella, Carestories, TO BE – Benessere presente/futuro, and the innovative SPES – Sostenere e Prevenire Esperienze di Suicidalità degli Adolescenti in alleanza con gli Insegnanti.
We conduct planning, research and evaluation, developing performing arts events and workshops that promote cultural and social participation through the Social Community Theatre methodology.
