“Theatre is a great civil force, it removes the cowardice of living, it removes the fear of the different, of the other, of the unknown.” – Leo De Berardinis

Within a community, being a citizen also means enjoying a series of rights, recognized by the Constitution of the Italian Republic. But only through participation one’s rights can be realized, giving shape to the life of the community. In these twenty years, SCT Centre has carried out numerous projects aimed at individual empowerment and civic activation through theatre, to involve communities and inhabitants in an agora, in order to discuss together the meaning of active citizenship and the fundamental rights of the human being.

"Involve communities and inhabitants in an agora, in order to discuss together the meaning of active citizenship and the fundamental rights of the human being."

Among these there are works on a local and national scale, such as Onstage, against gender discrimination, Io rispetto, that fights against hate speech in Italy, Un giorno ci dite dove ci accompagnate and Migrarti, that have brought attention to first and second generation migrants. Oca, l’arte che allena il pensiero is a collective game-performance on the themes of inequality, discrimination and active citizenship. SCT Centre has also addressed the issue of rights on an international scale, specifically in Ethiopia, South Sudan and Libya, with projects carried out for the International Organization for Migration and for NGOs in the Cooperation and Development sector: these experiences have allowed a comparison with different cultures and different customs, and theatrical actions to support rights from a global perspective of equity and social justice.
