The SPES Program is a multidisciplinary and integrated project born from research by the Department of Public Health and Pediatric Sciences of the University of Turin in collaboration with the SCT Centre with the aim of preventing suicide and promoting the mental well-being of teenagers through a program of awareness, intervention and training.
The SPES Program stems from the SPES project, a Public Engagement project of the University of Turin, launched in 2021, led by the Department of Public Health and Pediatric Sciences, in collaboration with the Departments of Humanities, Psychology, Philosophy and Educational Sciences, Neurosciences, the Social Community Theatre Centre, the Italian Society of Child Neuropsychiatry, Piedmont and Aosta Valley Section, the Regional School Office, the “Gobetti Marchesini-Casale” Institute of Turin, the “Amedeo Peyron” Institute of Turin – Regional Hub School for Hospital School and Home Education, the Maternal and Child Department of the ASL Città di Torino, Spazio BAC, the European People’s Theatre ETS, the Cultural Welfare Center, and the Culture and Development Association. It was designed for teachers, training them on the early identification of young people at risk of suicidal behavior through the use of Social and Community Theatre.
The SPES project successfully involved over 1000 people, including teachers, citizens, healthcare workers, and young people. To achieve this goal, two innovative training formats were developed, designed to meet the diverse needs of schools and other educational contexts. Two intervention protocols were created specifically for teachers: a theatrical performance (SPES Event) and a training workshop (SPES Workshop). These interventions were evaluated through a quasi-experimental, repeated-measures research design with a comparison group. The study, conducted on 129 secondary school teachers in Turin and Alessandria, demonstrated that the SPES training significantly improved teachers’ ability to recognize signs of distress in students, increasing their willingness to collaborate and their awareness of communication dynamics.
The heart of the SPES Program is the methodology of Social and Community Theatre, conceived and developed by the Social Community Theatre Centre of the University of Turin. This approach, which encourages the active involvement of participants through the direct experience of the theatrical creative process, highlights the educational and personal growth potential of theatre, allowing individuals to acquire new skills and competencies.
The SPES program‘s interventions include:

SPES EVENT – performance and health education lesson for the adult community
SPES4TEEN WORKSHOP – workshop for teenagers
SPES4TRAINER – training for social and healthcare workers and teachers
The interventions of the SPES Program have been and are constantly the subject of evaluation and scientific research by the University of Turin, Department of Public Health and Pediatric Sciences and Department of Psychology.
The SPES Workshop and SPES Event protocols are included in the Piedmont Region’s Prevention Plan, in the catalog of offerings of the Schools that Promote Health Program – Piedmont Region Health Department.
