A research-action project to enhance the skills of healthcare personnel in managing relationships with patients and relatives.

The project

Co-Health is a two-year research-action project in the healthcare sector with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation. The project aimed to design, experiment and evaluate a transferable training and intervention protocol for medical and healthcare personnel to enhance their soft skills and in particular their abilities to:

  • patient relationship management
  • relatives relationship management
  • communicating the treatment plan
  • to perform effective team work

The achievement of these skills fits within the overall aim of increasing the quality of healthcare staff training and improving the quality and effectiveness of the care relationship with the patient.

The premise from which the project started is that soft skills are central to a successful care process. The Co-Health project aimed to use innovative techniques from the Social and Community Theatre methodology to enhance the soft skills of healthcare personnel.

Action

The research path was structured over two years of activity and targeted:

  • 2 interprofessional groups of nursing and medical students
  • 1 interprofessional group of professionals and healthcare personnel working in the field and possibly belonging to the same operating unit

Each group underwent a workshop-based training course of 50 hours and 30 hours respectively.

Indirectly, the program also involved patients and relatives in direct contact with the trained healthcare personnel or with students on internships.

At the end of the research process, the results were presented at an international conference. The evaluation was developed through a quantitative-qualitative evaluation process and took into account, for the first time, the field performance of the analyzed group.

For each study group, the following were planned:

  • 1 evaluative pre-test for each participant
  • scientific evaluation of training effectiveness using the following tools: post-test, simulation, and field observation

The evaluation of the protocol’s effectiveness was entrusted to an independent team from the one responsible for the training, in order to ensure objectivity in the analysis and evaluation of the protocol’s effectiveness.

The research also made use of a comparison with the disciplinary fields of anthropology and neuroscience in order to implement the design of the intervention, integrate the interpretation of processes and results, and provide further evaluation elements for the definition of the protocol.

The multidisciplinary approach of the research constituted its strength and originality. Upon achieving results, it represented excellence at the European level, as the first research path in the field.

The Scientific Committee was composed of university representatives from the involved Departments, a neuroscience expert, representatives from the involved healthcare institutions and foundations, the P.I. (Principal Investigator) Alessandro Pontremoli, and Alessandra Rossi Ghiglione, P.M. (Project Manager) and project creator.

The project team was supported by a research team, a team of performing arts and theatre experts, an observation team, and a team of communication, organization, and management experts.
