An unlikely dialogue between an actor and his dentist-psychotherapist, telling the story of the climate crisis in a semi-serious, funny, and poetic way.

Il Respiro del Mondo is a piece of Narrative Theatre and Journalism that explores the climate crisis in a simple, funny, and poetic way. The show is built upon a solid foundation of scientific and journalistic research conducted by an interdisciplinary team of artists, experts, and researchers. Its goal is not only to inform but also to emotionally engage the audience with the subject matter. On stage, the protagonist is the actor himself during a long and unlikely session with his dentist, who also doubles as his psychotherapist. The actor is anxious because he has to prepare a show about the climate crisis. In fact, bringing the climate crisis to the stage is an almost impossible task: it has no plot, no hero; it is elusive and terrifying. The climate crisis is anything but a great story to tell.

The protagonist alternates between stand-up comedy sketches and narrative theatre to explain the mechanisms behind the climate crisis in a simple, surprising, and entertaining way. Where the crisis comes from; how the greenhouse effect works and why nobody knows the female scientist who discovered it; how the carbon cycle can help us understand what is truly happening; who will be hit hardest by the crisis; and what a hockey stick has to do with any of this. But above all, what simple actions – within anyone’s reach – we can take to truly feel like active protagonists in this story.

Almost immediately, we realize that the protagonist is not alone. Joining him on stage is an elusive sidekick, Dr. Cicciarella – both a psychotherapist and a dentist – whose figure remains perpetually hidden behind an armchair. Dr. Cicciarella listens and listens, says very little, smokes a bit, lets the silence settle, and drops a few simple hints to help the protagonist succeed in his quest to create a show about the climate crisis.

Alternating with the actor’s narration and comic hyperboles, video projections of an all-white, Arctic landscape appear in the background, suggesting a perspective broader than an anthropocentric one, and inviting everyone to feel like part of the same ecosystem.

Il Respiro del Mondo shows how the challenge of the climate crisis is, in fact, the challenge of building a better world—cleaner, fairer, and more prosperous—for ourselves and for all those who are yet to come.
