Thematic scope

ENVIRONMENT, COMMUNITY
I Giardini di Aurora is an artistic urban regeneration project that develops on the dual axis of space redevelopment and community development.

The project

I Giardini di Aurora (Aurora Gardens) is an art-based urban regeneration project developed on the dual axis of space redevelopment and community development and is the first winner, ex aequo with three other realities out of 1600 participants, of the Creative Living Lab – 3rd Edition public call promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

The project responded to the strong needs for open spaces and cultural projects that emerged during the pandemic crisis. It provided structural value to the Aurora neighborhood and the city, the gardens of the Barolo Social District (DSB) and nearby green areas of Valdocco in network with the City, Circ. 7, and local stakeholders, through a co-design process with the residents led by SCT Centre | TPE and partners.

The Aurora neighborhood is characterized on the one hand by a widespread fragility (high population density, low educational attainment, unemployment, degradation of public spaces, scarcity of open and green spaces), on the other hand by the presence of important development resources (low housing costs, young and multicultural population, solidarity networks in foreign communities, a lively associative fabric, project investments of the City).

I Giardini di Aurora focused on physical regeneration, access, knowledge, free use and ownership of unique places in the territory and it involved a plurality of residents in an intergenerational and multicultural perspective, promoting social cohesion and care of places as a common good.

The project targeted residents and operators of the DSB, inhabitants of the surrounding area of Aurora, and citizens of Turin; it set out to regenerate green spaces in Aurora and the DSB, to strengthen participation and integration; to foster relationships of proximity that cultivate ownership and care for the regenerated spaces; to train a core group of young people, both migrants and non-migrants, in organizational skills for managing the cultural program of the participating Gardens; and to integrate the initiative within the City’s broader cultural offerings.

Action

The project activities were carried out in order to connect with the urban green regeneration initiatives underway in Aurora. Specifically, the project included:

  • The regeneration of “Magnolia, il Giardino di Quartiere” (Magnolia, the Neighborhood Garden) (DSB) and the surrounding areas on Via Cottolengo and Via Cigna through hands-on workshops using recycled materials and tactical urbanism;
  • Implementation of artistic workshops for all Aurora residents and citizens (carpentry, tailoring, women’s choir, percussion, Italian language instruction through theater),
  • A capacity building program for young migrants;
  • A series of artistic and cultural events called “Serate alla Magnolia” (“Evenings at the Magnolia”);
  • The weekly opening of “Rosa: il giardino del Silenzio” (“Rosa: the Garden of Silence”) as a space for reading, meditation, and wellness for the local community;
  • A celebratory community event taking place in the green spaces and gardens of Aurora / Valdocco (including Pellegrino Garden, among others) featuring artistic performances that highlighted the outcomes of the workshops.

The I Giardini di Aurora (Aurora Gardens) project marked the beginning of SCT Centre’s engagement with this theme, establishing a foundation for ongoing efforts in the years to come in the areas of urban regeneration, social innovation, and promoting environmental awareness and well-being.
