Thematic scope

#SOStenibilmente is a school project that encourages active citizenship in environmental issues.

The project

In September 2019, the #SOStenibilmente (#Sustainably) project was launched, designed for elementary, middle and high schools, which joined on a voluntary and free,thanks to the co-financing from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Across the nation, youth activism and engagement in environmental issues is flourishing. Young people are eager to take action and shape their own future. Educating for Sustainable Development is critically important to initiate changes in lifestyles and to cultivate a culture grounded in environmental respect and the principles of sustainability.

This project seeks to empower young people to take a leading role in environmental issues by providing educational programs focused on sustainable development and youth-led initiatives. The pressing need is to assist schools in developing a new value system, encouraging shifts in our mindsets and daily practices.

Approximately 500 classrooms nationwide received educational/scientific kits designed by a team of experts coordinated by Legambiente. These kits enabled teachers throughout Italy to lead their students during the 2019/20 academic year, progressing from simply understanding global environmental challenges to actively mobilizing and taking concrete steps towards environmental protection and active citizenship.

Action

The Social and Community Theater of SCT Centre, in partnership with MAcA, led the training of teachers of all school levels, focusing on how to communicate effectively with students and conduct interactive learning activities, using a methodology that combines theater techniques with scientific content.

At the same time, they also took care of the training of Legambiente volunteers, who raised awareness on environmental issues, conducting workshops on group management and non-formal learning, for the development of social engagement skills based on the SCT methodology.

SCT Centre then produced the contents of a board game based on the format of the game of goose, which was printed and included in the educational kits distributed in schools. The game aims to stimulate interest in environmental issues and encourage reflection and critical thinking on them.

Each kit includes:

  • a guide for teachers (who will also benefit from specific training modules);
  • a series of games, tailored to the three age groups involved;
  • along with the game materials, detailed instructions are provided for creating the final product, which was presented on June 5, 2020, at the closing event.

There are three different versions of kits:

  • Primary schools: the focus is on domestic habits, thus attempting to trigger imitation processes of new ecological practices also within families;
  • Lower secondary schools: greater attention to environmental protection within the schools and in the neighborhood;
  • Upper secondary schools: the focus is on the civic activation component with the analysis of the problems and resources of the territories, and the organization of events able to involve volunteering, businesses, public administrations and the world of mass media.

In conclusion, SCT Centre designed and implemented the artistic performances for the project’s final event, which took place in Turin on April 22, 2020, Earth Day.
