#100% Plastica: a project for plastic collection that involves vulnerable groups in a path of socio-economic empowerment.

The project

#100%Plastica (#100%Plastic) – Development Intervention in the Plastic Waste Collection and Recycling Sector in Awassa had an ambitious social and environmental objective: the creation of an efficient separate waste collection system in the Hawassa province of Ethiopia, training new professional figures and raising awareness on the real importance of proper waste disposal.

#100%Plastica aimed to stimulate plastic collection through an entrepreneurial project that, exploiting the opportunities offered by separate waste collection, involved and accompanied the most vulnerable and poor social groups of the population on a path of social and economic empowerment.

The project therefore not only had an environmental value, but also the objective of creating an economic separate collection chain able to support itself autonomously and create economic opportunities for the territory, providing information and conditions to work safely, as well as training courses to strengthen the professional skills of those who collect waste, largely women.

In this context, the collaboration between SCT Centre and Cifa Onlus – an international NGO with over 30 years of commitment to the protection of the rights of children, young people and the most vulnerable categories of the population to promote access to primary and secondary education – was strengthened. SCT Centre oversaw part of the awareness-raising program of the #100%Plastica project, with the aim of increasing environmental awareness and sensitivity of local communities, with particular regard to primary and secondary school students and their families.

Action

FIRST MISSION – january-march 2018

  1. Selection of two Community Mobilizers (CMs), through a SCT workshop and an individual interview, then trained through organizational Capacity Building and SCT action workshop. These figures are aware of the risks associated with the dispersion and combustion of plastic and know how its recycling process works and have shown that they are able to independently coordinate the group of young artists in community awareness activities;
  2. Mapping of Hawassa’s creative resources. The SCT operators visited 10 youth centers in Hawassa, mapping the artistic activities held within them. In collaboration with the responsible figures of the various artistic clubs (theater, dance, circus) within the youth centers, 30 young artists, aged between 18 and 28, were selected to participate in the Youth Capacity Building (YCB);
  3. SCT Capacity Building aimed at young artists in Hawassa and creation of the show 100% Plastica. 30 local young artists acquired the basic techniques of SCT, gaining greater awareness on environmental issues, especially on the risks associated with the dispersion and combustion of plastic in the environment and its recycling process, and actively contributed to creating the dramaturgy of the 100% Plastic Free Show (Read the story The beauty of the characters that arise from the word “Plastic”). The SCT operators oversaw 6 performances of the show in Hawassa primary schools, in addition to the 14 performances coordinated by the CMs. The show reached 4,000 participants aged between 7 and 12 years.

SECOND MISSION – november-december 2018

  1. Adaptation of the 100% Plastic Free Show for an adult audience, integrated with a session of Theater of the Oppressed (ToO) and replicated in 5 secondary schools in Hawassa (for young people between 15 and 20 years old) and in 3 special occasions in front of a heterogeneous audience, for an estimated total of 2,000 people;
  2. Realization of 7 flash mob formats, staged in the public spaces of Hawassa, reaching an estimated audience of 1,040 people;
  3. Design and implementation of a community event in Hawassa on December 22, 2018. The event took place with a parade through the main streets of the city and the 100% Hawassa Plastic Free! party. The party, held in a Youth Center with a large courtyard, included sports competitions, a show, flash mobs, a musical contest, refreshments and information stands, and welcomed mainly young people from secondary schools and universities, workers in the sector (collector associations, fishermen’s association, boat association) and representatives of project partners (GIZ, Hawassa Wubet). The event was attended by more than 500 people and was broadcast on local and national television and radio networks.

III MISSION – may-june 2019

  1. Design and implementation of SCT training in conducting community events;
  2. Workshops in Hawassa primary schools;
  3. Large community event on the occasion of the International Environment Day, June 5, 2019.
