Transumanza di Comunità (Community Transhumance), The theatrical walk that tells a story about roots and enhances the territory, is an action conducted according to the Social and Community Theatre methodology, which places the communities of the Orco and Gallenca Valleys at the center of its work through the involvement of young generations and local communities. The project aimed to enhance the traditional annual moment of the transhumance of livestock through the creation of a cultural event that actively involved the community of the territory – local residents, shopkeepers, organizations, schools, municipalities.
We need farmers,
poets, people who know how to make bread,
who love trees and recognize the wind.
Franco Arminio
Transhumance is an event that, in its very nature, sparks the curiosity of valley communities and locals alike. A ritual and symbolic walk that, as it carries the group from the city to the mountains, speaks to us of roots, of journey, of soaring heights, of our shared history and our common future.
The project included a capacity building program designed for the local youth for the acquisition of necessary skills to recreate and manage the same initiative in the future. The SCT methodology combines the languages of theater and art with the practices of community creation and enhancement of the territory, through the rediscovery and networking of skills and resources and the creation of cultural events (theater, music, dance, art) to attract other communities of residents and tourists.
The project was carried out in the following steps:
OCTOBER – JANUARY 2021
– Mapping and networking: broadening the partnership and engaging other local entities – municipalities, schools, businesses, associations, etc. During this phase, the initiative was promoted, connections were established between the entities involved, and resources were networked by the various bodies for the project’s implementation. These resources included: technical and artistic skills (choirs, bands, etc.), venues, volunteering, and promotion channels. A word-of-mouth campaign was also launched during this phase to broaden participation;
– Establishing the age range of young participants (15 – 25).
FEBRUARY – MAY 2021
– Capacity building with young participants: aiming to a long-term sustainability, the group focused on creating territory skills to develop an event that would be carried out by the community and ensure the initiative’s durability, directly taken over by the community itself. Interviews were conducted in the territory to provide dramaturgical inspiration. The participating team was then involved in the final performance.
MAY – JUNE 2021
– Preparation and final event – Sunday, May 6, 2021: Ascent to the Piana di Mares on the Transhumance road; Community theatrical celebration; descent to reach the former Musrai mountain pasture where the group enjoyed a lunch based on local products.
