Terract is an Italo-French project that enhances the cultural and natural heritage of the Alps through social and community theater.

The project

Terract – Gli attori della Terra(Terract – Earth’s Actors) is one of the winning projects of the Interreg Alcotra 2014-2020 call for proposals, which came to life from the collaboration of SCT Centre | Corep of Turin (lead partner) with the Compagnia Il Melarancio of Cuneo and the Théâtre National de Nice.

Terract was designed to enhance the cultural, natural, and landscape heritage of the Alpine area between Italy and France, using the Social and Community Theatre Methodology to rediscover the resources of the local community through the languages of theatre, music and dance.

Over the three years of the project, Terract trained 30 young people in their twenties from Italy and France – known as “pioneers” – with an Executive Master’s degree, with the aim of developing professional skills and sensitivity to the themes of cultural and natural heritage, and it involved 100 young people between the ages of 14 and 19, enhancing their basic skills and their sensitivity.

Terract developed in the cross-border area located between Turin, Cuneo and Nice, between the geographical axis Turin – Cuneo – Tenda Pass – Roya Valley – Nice and the geographical axis Nice – Lombarda Pass – Cuneo – Turin.

Between 2017 and 2020, Terract brought the attention of local communities and tourism to the natural and cultural heritage of the Vermenagna (Italy), Roya (France), Stura (Italy) and Tinée (France) valleys, involving all the main municipalities, including Vernante, Robilante, Limone Piemonte, La Brigue, Tenda, Saint Dalmas de Tende, Breil sur Roya, Moiola, Gaiola, Aisone, Demonte, Vinadio, La Tour sur Tinée, Valdeblore, Saint Étienne de Tinée, Saint Dalmas le Selvage, Clans, Isola.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Terract used the Social and Community Theatre methodology to create skills in the creation and organization of community events, community dramaturgy and theatre for:

  • young people between the ages of 20 and 25 with an interest in working in the management and promotion of cultural and natural heritage, who are called “pioneers”;
  • new generations (teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19), who continued the process of enhancing the territory started by the pioneer group.

Action

The project implemented three “Alpine Trails” connecting the areas between Cuneo and Nice, along with two summer “Theater Workshops” (in 2019 and 2020), the latter taking place in summer 2020 amidst the Covid crisis. These Workshops and Terract‘s training events were delivered by the trainee pioneer group, supported by tutors and industry professionals, actively engaging 74 associations across Italy and France, as well as 55 municipalities in both countries. Over 22 natural areas and landmarks were showcased, with over 2,000 residents participating throughout the project’s duration.

The Covid crisis stimulated the participating training group to develop creative and innovative cultural formats, usable remotely and capable of activating, even in a situation of strong criticality, processes of involvement of the territories.

The activities involved over 80 professionals from the artistic field, including set design, planning, cultural operations, community animation, and videomaking, largely from the territories involved on both the Italian and French sides.

Several actions were implemented during the project:

  • Implementation of a 400-hour executive master’s degree program for 30 young people between the ages of 20 and 35 with an interest in protecting local heritage, cultural operators, or young people who belong to the local associative fabric (associations, pro loco, museums, parks). The course is part of the permanent education program and it is aimed at acquiring skills to conceive, organize and coordinate cultural events and community events. These are both theatrical and dramaturgical skills that enable participants to rediscover, reinterpret and enhance the resources of the territory through an engaging and attractive narrative, and transversal skills useful in any work or training context;
  • Organization of a series of masterclasses with expert figures in local cultural and landscape heritage;
  • Production of two major summer theatrical events (summer 2019 and 2020), called “theater workshops,” involving young people (between 14-19 years old) who live in the Alpine area between Italy and France. During the workshops, training alternates with the production of shows and traveling performances;
  • Community festivals;
  • Production of the Community Vegetable Soup, a performance of theater, music and dance combined with the sharing of a good vegetable soup made with vegetables and herbs donated by the local population during a lively and festive theatrical parade;
  • Analysis and mapping of existing studies concerning the cultural and environmental resources of the territory.
