DOC  With Ethics we want to give people providence. Without God. The best of all possible worlds.

ADAM  Doc, in my entire life, a right choice – I mean truly right, one you can look back on and call right… I’ve never made one.

DOC  Imagine when you’re eighty years old, you look back, and every single choice you made was the right one. And not a single regret.

2029, the West is in the midst of the third global economic crisis, the most devastating in living memory. The multinational corporation Next creates Ethics, an app capable of providing the most advantageous solution to any question: who is the woman or man I should marry to be happy? What is the right job for me? Who should I vote for to feel fully satisfied? Which haircut would be best for me? Should I pay my taxes or can I evade them? Ethics has access to all your information—social media, messages, emails, medical records—and is capable of comparing them with the massive amounts of information provided by Big Data.

Inside the Next laboratories, the story of the two protagonists, Doc and Adam, unfolds. The former is the inventor of Ethics, and the latter is the guinea pig who has to test it. Adam is an ordinary guy, simple, direct, with an engaging spontaneity. He is chosen by Ethics among tens of thousands of candidates as the perfect guinea pig and finds himself, from one day to the next, managing a thrilling upheaval of his own life. Doc is an unconventional scientist, smart and a bit nerdy, with a passionate love for the great classics of English literature. Doc is a lonely man who tries to keep his ego in check and attempts – with some annoyance – to accompany Adam on his human evolution. As the dynamic between the two protagonists evolves, outside the Next laboratories, the events of a West overcome by crisis unfold: the arrival of Ethics in the world becomes a new hope for humanity, or perhaps, a possible end.

A grotesque comedy, hilarious at times and deeply dramatic at others, where the two actors shift rapidly from the naturalistic roles of the two protagonists—Doc and Adam—to the interpretation of dozens of small, grotesque characters: journalists, unemployed workers, politicians, elderly working-class women, young students, judges—theatrical masks and symbolic icons of the turmoil of our time—bringing to life a show full of energy.

Adamo ed Etica feels like an episode of Black Mirror, but in an exquisitely theatrical key: the actors undergo continuous transformations in plain sight, using wigs, stylized costumes, polystyrene heads, and toy weapons, moving within a modular and highly symbolic set.

Adamo ed Etica reflects on the theme of ethical choice today and imagines an immediate possible future, building upon the research of the Pop Economix collective regarding the latest discoveries in the fields of artificial intelligence and predictive algorithms.
