A one-man show that weaves together three stories – the history of the disposable economy, the tragedy of marine plastic pollution, and the journey of the young entrepreneur Tom Szaky – to propose a new vision of the relationship between production, consumption, and the environment.

The show tells how an idea, born from the abuse and misunderstanding of a famous quote by Adam Smith – “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest” – founded the neoliberal vision that limited the lifespan of lightbulbs and filled the planet with waste. The new “plastic continent” discovered by Captain Charles J. Moore is now right before our eyes, yet we have not fully reckoned with what we are risking. Helping us understand that “another way is possible” is Tom Szaky, a young Canadian who started a company capable of turning food waste into fertilizer and chewing gum into benches.

The thread of Blue Revolution. Economics in the disposable era, the new show by the Pop Economix Association, moves lightly across the last three centuries to show how our world is close to collapse and how a new alliance between humanity and the environment is needed to save it. An alliance based on the circular economy—the one that transforms waste into wealth—and the civil economy conceived by Antonio Genovesi in the exact same century as Adam Smith, according to which profit is possible but is merely a tool for the common good.
