A performance that narrates the journey of losing language and rediscovering a different kind of communication, built on affections, discoveries, and renewed bonds, during the dark times of illness.

The project

ConversAzioni (Conversations) is a community theater project on aphasia, created through the creation of a show born from the encounter with people with aphasia and its presentation in sensitive places of the community in Turin and Piedmont. Aphasia is a form of disability that occurs following a stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, or head trauma. It affects the sphere of spoken language, including comprehension, reading, and writing, but the injuries sustained do not alter intelligence or the emotional sphere. Often, people affected by it “disappear” at a social and relational level. The show ConversAzioni tells the story of the experience of losing language and finding another form of communication, made of affections, discoveries, and rediscovered connections, in the darkest moment of illness.

Project objectives:

  • raise public awareness of the issue to manage communication difficulties with people with aphasia;
  • propose moments of meeting that are opportunities for socialization and relationship for people with aphasia;
  • involve the family and friend network of people with aphasia in the discussion of the topic, to stimulate sharing and mutual support.

Action

The show is aimed at people living with aphasia, caregivers, socio-health personnel involved in the hospitalization phase, and the general public.

ConversAzioni originated as a theatrical work that started from listening to the stories of those living with aphasia, thanks to direct contact with the patients of the theatre workshop active since 2011 at the Aphasia Center CIRPFondazione Carlo Molo ONLUS of Turin, conducted by Lorena La Rocca.

People with aphasia told their stories through the non-verbal storytelling tools proposed to actively contribute to the dramaturgical research. A first step to start communicating again, making their experience useful for an artistic action of social awareness and information.

Within the Aphasia Center CIRP (FCM), social theatre has carried out rehabilitative and artistic activities with different paths on non-verbal communication and self-narration.

The show refers to the poetics of narrative theatre, integrating it with a musical component, live music and singing, and physical theatrical play to evoke in a simple and engaging way the condition of those who have difficulty communicating. Stories taken from real life take shape on stage in the game of two performers and a musician, through expressive languages of which words are only a part.

The show has been replicated in the 10 districts of the city of Turin and at Palazzo Madama on the occasion of the national conference on aphasia, and has been replicated on the occasion of training interventions or reviews on Theatre and Health.
