Promoting the socio-economic inclusion of returnees and migrants through the provision of training, credit and psychological support in Ethiopia.

The project

Sfide (Challenges), an initiative by CIFA NGO, worked in South Wollo, Ethiopia, to prevent irregular migration and enhance the living standards of returnees. By providing awareness campaigns, vocational training, financial aid and psychological support, Sfide sought to promote the labor market integration and psycho-social wellbeing of the individuals involved.

Three years after their last intervention in Ethiopia, the SCT team returned to the South Wollo region to participate in the CIFA project, where, over six weeks, they implemented a Social and Cultural Theatre intervention within the project.

In this context, the SCT intervention was based on two principal lines of action:

  • Select and train 2 Community Mobilizers on awareness-raising techniques with a community-based approach;
  • Train 10 teachers from Dessie, teaching them how to use the “Path of Life” board game as an awareness-raising tool.

Action

ACTIVITIES FOR COMMUNITY MOBILIZERS

The SCT intervention for Community Mobilizers was carried out through two main activities: selection and training.

The selection process for the two candidates was carried out through an SCT workshop. This format was ideal for: observing the candidates as they interact within a group dynamic so that individual characteristics related to social skills emerge spontaneously; evaluating their level within specific competencies such as report writing; writing a storytelling piece; expressing themselves through creative abilities; and leading the group. To support the selection process, an evaluation table was developed to record daily scores obtained in the following observation categories: teamwork and cooperation; autonomy; commitment and participation; reporting skills; and listening skills.

Following the workshop, the two most qualified candidates were chosen. Subsequently, the training was conducted, with the explicit goal of assisting the CMs in developing the necessary skills and abilities to perform their roles.

The main tasks assigned to the CMs:

  1. Distribution of the “Path of Life” game in local schools;
  2. Creation and production of a twenty-episode radio program;
  3. Design and distribution of flyers and brochures.

These CM tasks aim to:

  • Educate about the procedures concerning irregular and regular migration;
  • Address the social stigma surrounding mental health issues and returnees;
  • Promote the CIFA-run Center in Dessie as a community reference point for information on regular and irregular migration.

ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS

The local CIFA staff selected ten teachers who live and work in Dessie to be trained in the use of the “Path of Life” game for awareness-raising purposes. The specific objective was to enable the group of teachers to in turn conduct an awareness-raising session by playing the board game with their classes.
