A training and support program for groups of young people on socio-health issues and risks of irregular migration.

The project

The #lemieradici (#myroots) project was born with the aim of raising awareness among the Ethiopian population about the risks and dangers involved in choosing to migrate irregularly to Arab countries. Within this intervention, SCT Centre has created a training and support program for groups of young people on socio-health issues, alongside those more inherent to the risks of irregular migration, involving the local population, and in particular young women and children from elementary and middle school.

#lemieradici is the second international cooperation project in Ethiopia co-financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation which sees Cifa Onlus and SCT Centre as partners. It was posed as a sort of natural continuation of the emergency project Migrazione irregolare: un’alternativa possibile (Irregular migration: a possible alternative) previously carried out, with SCT Centre in the three woreda Ambassel, Worebabo and Tehuledere, in the northern part of the country.

Both projects aim to raise awareness among the Ethiopian population about the risks and dangers involved in choosing to migrate irregularly to Arab countries. The dangers are greater for young women, who during their long journeys of hope towards a better future often suffer violence of all kinds. #lemieradici focused on the South Wollo area, where every year 15,054 emigrants originating from this area are repatriated by the Saudi Government.

The factors influencing the “culture of migration” include: limited employment opportunities and low returns from economic activities; community pressures stemming from a misperception of economic benefits; and a lack of adequate healthcare services. Therefore, the #lemieradici project aimed to contribute to improving not only the socio-economic conditions of potential migrants in South Wollo but also their socio-health conditions. The project pursued four main objectives: the creation of income-generating activities, the strengthening of resilience, the improvement of basic services, and the implementation of awareness campaigns.

Action

As part of this initiative, the SCT Centre developed a training and support program for youth groups, addressing socio-health topics alongside those more directly related to the risks of irregular migration, as promoted by CIFA in collaboration with the SCT. Similar to the previous project that united the SCT Centre and Cifa Onlus in Ethiopia, the game “The Path of Life” was employed. Through theatrical enactments, this game allowed participants to empathize with the diverse characters and situations encountered by migrants throughout their journeys and lives, prompting reflection on the risks and consequences of irregular migration.

12,000 young people benefited from awareness-raising activities on good health protection practices and 72 operators were trained on taking charge of the health needs of youth.
