A workshop with second-generation and italian youth that explored the theme of 'home' from different perspectives.

The project

Il mondo in una stanza. Viaggio tra giovani culture metropolitane e radici migranti (The world in a room. Journey between young metropolitan cultures and migrant roots), among the winners of the MIBACT national call for proposals ‘Migrarti 2018 – Performance’, is a Social and Community Theater project that SCT Centre has created with the Youth of the Regional Islamic Federation of Piedmont.

A workshop bringing together second-generation youth and young Italians to explore the multifaceted theme of home: from their ancestral homes to their current residences and the homes they aspire to create.

The project featured a theater workshop facilitated by a professional team specializing in Social and Community Theater, culminating in the production of an original performance. Following the SCT methodology, the show’s narrative was not based on a pre-existing script. Instead, the dramaturgy was collaboratively developed, drawing inspiration from the unique perspectives and experiences shared by each participant in the workshop. Specifically, the content of the original show stemmed from interviews conducted by the participants themselves, in collaboration with the Teatro Popolare Europeo and the Social Community Theatre Centre team. Through this process, the young participants gained valuable skills, including active listening, empathetic responding, and the ability to shape narratives for maximum expressive and theatrical impact. These skills empowered them to conduct interviews with their families, peers, and their families.

The theater workshop and the final art event sought to showcase, for the audience (local residents and migrant communities, young people and shopkeepers in the neighborhood, families and associations), the unique stories, lived experiences, and culture of migrant communities permanently settled in the Turin area, especially the Moroccan community.

The SCT program involved a group of second-generation youth (originating from Morocco and Lebanon) aged between 17 and 30, alongside young Italian participants. The SCT workshop also included two trainees from the Advanced SCT School and two from the Basic School.

The families of those participating in the workshop are the indirect target group of the project.

Action

  1. Initiative launch (March 2018). Planning with project partners and operational meetings.
  1. A theater and dramaturgy workshop (April-May 2018) constituted the initial phase of the project, equipping the group with the necessary tools and communication skills to engage with local residents and conduct interviews. The professional facilitators guided the participants in exploring narrative techniques, photography, and the utilization of space. The central questions guiding this phase were: What defines a home? What are the characteristic signs of a home? How do you integrate elements of your culture and identity within a home? Where do we see evidence of change and cultural exchange with the local community?
  1. Photographic visit and collection of narratives within the homes of the families contacted (May 2018). The participants visited and photographed the selected apartments together with the professional artists. Gaining access to these homes and photographing them was a significant undertaking, requiring a strong foundation of trust with the residents. The interviews focused particularly on the children within each family and the peers of the workshop participants.
  1. Dramaturgy and scenic design workshop Part II (April – May 2018). The photographic materials and interviews were adapted into a theatrical format with the assistance of professional artists. In this second workshop phase, the group received guidance in developing theatrical narratives based on the interviews and constructing the stage design for the performance with the support of a set designer and photographer.
  1. Original performance and Community Event (July 2018). The two evening performances of the show took place on Friday, July 13th and Saturday, July 14th, 2018 at the Dar Al Hikma Cultural Center and Hammam, located at Via Fiocchetto 15, Turin. A community meal was organized, bringing together migrant communities and local citizens involved in the project. In addition to the families of the participants and the interviewed families, invitations were extended to representatives of immigrant communities permanently residing in the area, local associations working to support immigrant communities, and the local citizenry.
