OnStage (nON STAre a GuardarE – Don’t Just Stand There and Watch) is an interdisciplinary social theatre project aimed at countering discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It was funded by the University of Turin under the ‘Public Engagement’ call and supported by the City of Turin.
Bringing together different disciplines—psychology, theatre, law, sociology, computer science—OnStage starts from the observation that there is still a long way to go to eliminate these discriminations. This includes not only the high-profile cases reported in the news that draw media attention, but also (and above all) those discriminatory processes that permeate daily life, which are constant and often ‘under the radar’ but capable of generating deep wounds and widespread distress.
In response to the ongoing discrimination based on sexual orientation, in 2022 the SCT Centre, in collaboration with the Departments of Psychology, Humanities, Law, Historical Studies, Cultures Politics and Society, and Computer Science, Cirsde, General Directorate, and CUG (Single Guarantee Committee) of the University of Turin, developed the interdisciplinary Public Engagement project OnStage – nON STAre a GuardarE. This project aims to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation through an interactive performance that is the result of scientific research on the content and a work process developed according to the methodology of Social and Community Theatre.

THE THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE – AWARENESS AND ACTIVATION
The project produced a performance, OnStage – nON STAre a GuardarE (Don’t Just Stand There and Watch), created from a series of research studies, interviews, and workshops with students and residents. It actively engages the audience through performative languages and continuous devices aimed at sparking reflection on the theme of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
OnStage is an interactive theatrical performance (game-performance) of Social and Community Theatre aimed at stimulating critical thinking and countering LGBTQIA+ discrimination. In this specific case, the show served as both an awareness tool and a means of activating the communities it encounters. The stage features 25 squares inspired by the traditional ‘Game of the Goose’ format, 2 performers, and 3 musicians who invite the audience—divided into two teams—to roll the dice and advance on the giant squares. Each square ‘activates’ content: historical facts, quizzes, scenes from daily life, and monologues drawn from true stories.
WORKSHOPS FOR CITIZENS
Following the engagement and activation phase through the viewing of the theatrical performance, we proceeded to hold social and community theater workshops for the citizens, focusing on the theme of discrimination and counteracting actions through the social theater method. Each edition of the workshop included two meetings and a shared common moment.
OnStage is carried out by the Department of Psychology as the lead partner, in collaboration with the Departments of Humanities, Law, Historical Studies, Cultures Politics and Society, and Computer Science, Cirsde, General Directorate, and CUG (Single Guarantee Committee).
The project began with historical and social research supervised by various Department faculty members, leading to the phase of social and community theatre production. The project was executed in several steps, including: interviews, workshops, and meetings with local associations and organizations involved in LGBTQIA+ activism (CISL FSUR – CISL School Federation, Quore Association, FLC Cigl, UIL, Turin Pride LGBT Coordination) to gather testimonies and viewpoints that were then integrated into the performance dramaturgy by the SCT Centre.
