Caravan. Artists on the Road is a European Social and Community Theatre project, winner of the European cultural project of EACEA – Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency in 2011. Over the course of 42 months, it created innovative artistic and theatrical interventions on the theme: rebirth from crisis. Thanks to a traveling theater – the CARAVAN – the project has held more than 40 events in Europe, bringing together art, theater and community; it has crossed 15 nations, in cooperation with 11 international partners. Caravan has met more than 60,000 spectators, 8,000 active participants; it has functioned as a place of cooperation for nearly 200 artists and theater professionals; it has created local networks developing contacts between associations, spontaneous groups, volunteers, institutions, professionals and residents.
For three and a half years, the professionals of the Caravan project shared artistic languages and experiences, created new networks of cooperation and, above all, drafted a “Cultural Manifesto” for the European development of Social and Community Theatre.
Presented in October 2010 as part of the 2007-2013 Culture Program under Strand 1.1 “multi-annualcooperationprojects”, the Caravan project received European co-financing in March 2011 as the top-ranked project out of 61 projects qualified for the final selection, with a score of 99/100, the only Italian project awarded, defined by the Italian Contact Point of the Culture Program (based at the MiBAC – Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) as a national excellence in Europe.
Starting from the context of economic, social and cultural crisis afflicting Europe, Caravan wanted to promote the cultural and social empowerment of local communities. Through artistic performances based on Social and Community Theatre, the project sought to give new life to the symbolic places of the crisis.
In four European cities – Turin, Seville, Holstebro and Sofia – Caravan has created artistic events and theatrical productions. In addition, it has created a traveling theater, equipped with multimedia equipment, to travel across Europe and spread theatrical productions. Ten conferences / seminars were organized in ten European cities to share best practices and results achieved during the project.
The project’s traveling symbol was the Caravan itself: an innovative multimodal structure that transformed common places into theatrical stages, open-air cinemas and exhibition spaces.
Recognized by the EACEA for its innovation and methodology, Caravan anticipated the directives of Creative Europe, demonstrating the power of art in promoting social and cultural change.
