Caravan Next. Feed the Future is a European Social and Community Theatre and audience development project, which won the Creative Europe Large Scale call in 2015 and which carried out 40 cultural events in as many cities in Europe and 5 special events in the United States, Morocco, Uruguay, Taiwan and Australia. The events actively involved local communities on a common theme: European challenges of the Third Millennium. The 42-month project was conceived by the Social Community Theatre Centre | Unito (Project Methodological Supervision) and Odin Teatret (Lead Partner) together with 11 other European partners. The project partners worked in synergy both in their own territory and through artistic exchanges with the other countries involved.
In Turin, from May 26th to June 1st, 2016, the first Macro Event of the European project, carried out by the Social Community Theatre Centre in collaboration with numerous local partners, took place.
The project was directed by the Social Community Theatre Centre | Unito; Società Consortile OGR-CRT collaborated on communication; Opera Barolo and S-Nodi were the protagonists and promoted the Caravan Next activities in Turin.
The working theme chosen for the city of Turin is Saving The Beauty, drawing inspiration from Dostoevsky’s famous phrase, “Beauty will save the world.” A reflection on how and in what way beauty and its preservation can represent a challenge for the new Millennium.
Through the methodology of Social and Community Theatre, from September 2015 the Caravan Next team, through meetings with organizations, residents and local multi-ethnic communities, organized workshop moments, community and artistic creation festivals with the intent to strengthen the sense of social connection between places and residents of the neighborhoods involved in the project. In particular, helping local, multi-ethnic and diverse communities to tell their stories and network with each other, moving away from a dimension of anonymity and loneliness.
The activities from September 2015 to May 2016 took place in 3 locations in the city of Turin: the Barolo Social District, the Via Baltea space | Barriera Workshops and the Public Baths of Via Agliè; located in Districts 6 and 7, despite the diversity of history and protagonists, they have in common a social work of support for vulnerable groups and the fight against poverty through innovative assistance and empowerment processes. The SCT Centre team activated creative programs of Social and Community Theatre that involved the leading figures of the local realities to give value to their stories and actions, build relationships and participation, and tell the city what happens there. In particular, the weekly workshops conducted by SCT and the singing, dance and set design teams involved adolescents, children, migrant women, university students, young artists and the citizens of the neighborhood. During the proposed workshops, the participants actively took part in the creation of performances, artistic acts connected to the theme of beauty and how they would like to preserve it for the future. Furthermore, a group of actors and playwrights interviewed the inhabitants and representatives of the local organizations.
The Saving The Beauty Festival. From May 26th to June 1st, 2016, a great week-long celebration was created — starting from creative paths and the active participation of the local population — that told the city, with parades, shows, moments of reflection and rituals of sharing, about the journey made during the year with the people and organizations that live in the Barolo Social District and the Barriera di Milano neighborhood. The events took place in these very places; for the first time, the Social District was opened to the public, with a large Opening parade on May 26th. In the Barriera di Milano neighborhood, in collaboration with the S-Nodi organizations, we involved various classes from high schools, young second-generation immigrants, women and residents, as well as artistic associations that worked in Via Baltea to prepare a large community event in Piazza Foroni on the evening of May 29th. The stories of the neighborhood and the people collected during the previous months of work were narrated together with the work of the artistic workshops in two theatrical performances on May 30th and 31st in Via Baltea 3.
