The Bread and Roses choir, which ran for four editions from 2020 to 2024, was initially funded by a Public Engagement grant from the University of Turin and was launched during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first two years, due to the health emergency, meetings alternated between in-person activities, at the Spazio BAC and outdoor space of the Barolo district, and online activities. Then, from 2022 onwards, the choir has been held regularly at Spazio BAC.
The project was designed for women and partecipation was free until 2023. The choir involved women of different ages and cultures, with a total of around 80 women participating across the various editions, ranging from 12 to 25 participants per session.
The School was expanded to include men in its final phase, with a participation of 5 male members.
The choir had the following goals:
The program combined vocal training (using Mod.A.I. techniques) with music and theatre creation (using Social and Community Theatre techniques). The course alternated between training sessions with vocal coaches (Bread and Roses School) and group cohesion and repertoire development sessions (Bread and Roses choir).
The choir has participated in the following performance events:
The choir has reached an audience of approximately 2000 people over the years.
The University of Turin has also produced an evaluation and a scientific paper on the 2020-2021 edition of the choir: Alessandra Venturini, Andrea Ricci, Cristina Mosso, Può la partecipazione ad attività culturali degli stranieri migliorare le possibilità di integrazione economica? (Can participation in cultural activities by foreigners improve economic integration?), in A. Pontremoli, A. Rossi Ghiglione, R. M. Fabris and V. Zangirolami, Performing arts, well-being e salute di comunità – Le performing arts, una risorsa per il benessere e la salute (Performing arts, well-being and community health – The performing arts, a resource for well-being and health). Published by Bulzoni. Within the same volume, V. Zangirolami’s essay Bread and Roses – Il canto corale per lo sviluppo di life skills e inclusione sociale nel progetto europeo Caravan Next (Torino) (Bread and Roses – Choral singing for the development of life skills and social inclusion in the European project Caravan Next (Turin)) presents the Bread and Roses project.
