A traveling performance on the theme of pilgrimage to sacred sites and popular devotion.

The project

Passo dopo Passo: Per Grazia Ricevuta (Step by Step – By Grace Received) is a community theater event resulting from the artistic research and audience engagement on the themes of popular religiosity and pilgrimage carried out by SCT Centre and Teatro Popolare Europeo for the project “Itinerari dello spirito: il cammino di Oropa tra Biellese e Canavese” (“Itineraries of the Spirit: the Oropa Path between Biellese and Canavese”). A territorial enhancement initiative selected by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation as part of the “In luce” (“In the light”) call for proposals, to extend the Oropa Path by including the Sanctuary and the Sacred Mount of Belmonte in Canavese, the Sanctuary of San Giovanni and the Sanctuary of the Brughiera in eastern Biellese and the Sacred Mount of Varallo.

“We embark on this journey to find truth, to find real love, to find a more profound connection. Otherwise, we wouldn’t even take the first step

Mahatma Gandhi

The event offered a deep look into popular religiosity, focusing on the symbolism of the journey, pilgrimage, and spirituality. The site-specific performance unfolded through the evocative spaces of the Sanctuary of Oropa, bringing to light the individual and collective experiences of those who gather in this place in search of a deeper meaning. From the testimony of pilgrims who go there weekly, to the creation of the “Mantle of Mercy,” the ex-votos, every detail reveals the intrinsic connection between spirituality and daily life.

The essence of Passo dopo Passo: Per Grazia Ricevuta was the creation of a participatory and active experience, where sharing and beauty were the cornerstones. The event was designed to create a ritual and evocative atmosphere, foster moments of beauty, and generate a strong sense of sharing despite the diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and ages. The participation of the external audience was designed to offer an experience that is at once cultural, inclusive, and sharing of spirituality, encouraging the participation of a multigenerational audience as well as a cultured adult audience sensitive to heritage.

Action

The show comes to life thanks to a careful analysis of the surrounding context, enriched by meetings and interviews conducted in the area with residents, pilgrims and walking groups. Authentic witnesses of the themes addressed and the places visited, whose experiences are highlighted through the technique of Narrative Theatre.

Project activities:

  • Research and interviews: The project is based on an analysis of the local context and interviews conducted with residents, pilgrims, and walking groups in the area of the Sanctuary of Oropa
  • A theatrical performance: The collected testimonies were used to create a theatrical performance that highlights the words, experiences, and lives of the people interviewed.
  • Site-specific performance: The show takes place in various spaces of the Sanctuary of Oropa and tells the stories of individual and collective spiritual experiences linked to the place
  • Audience engagement: The performance is designed to encourage active participation from the audience and a shared experience of beauty and spirituality
