TIC TAC – Teatro Cultura e Tanto Altro da Condividere (Theater, Culture and Much More to Share) is a project created to reach a new audience of families with limited cultural habits and involve them in creating afternoons of theater, culture and leisure activities. The program consists of new formats that will guide and modify the programming of classic theater festivals, integrating into a single “cultural package” walks, museum visits, creative workshops, food and a theatrical performance.
TIC TAC develops cultural innovation actions and is supported by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation as part of the Open2Change 2019 call for proposals.
The project involves 3 foothill territories (Cuneese, Pinerolese and Verbano Cusio Ossola) and was conceived by three children’s theater companies (Compagnia Il Melarancio as leader, Onda Teatro and Unoteatro/Nonsoloteatro as partners) in collaboration with the Social Community Theatre Centre in the role of cultural innovator.
The main element of innovation is the creation of three family boards actively involved in the design and communication of the new format. The family boards, one for each theater partner, are made up of all family members, involved from the beginning of the work in an artistic and creative way.
After the first design phase launched in February 2020, following the Covid emergency in the spring of 2020, the TIC TAC team redesigned the project, focusing the engagement actions on maintaining relationships with already retained families and in parallel with the development of digital actions (online stories, YouTube videos, online workshops) that led to an expansion of non-loyal audiences.
After the 2020 summer season and the resumption of some live events, in autumn 2020 the partners launched the second important project action, a quali-quantitative questionnaire to monitor the cultural habits and consumption of families pre and post Covid with a specific focus on theater attendance.
The questionnaire, distributed to over 200 families in the three reference territories, is the basis for the first in-depth analysis of cultural habits of families in the theatrical, cultural and leisure fields.
In the new lockdown phase of November 2020, the TIC TAC team further reflected on the role and potential of culture for families in the future restart and on the possible ways, digital and live, of maintaining the engagement developed with the online audience and including new families by promoting discussions and moments of reflection with experts in the national cultural sector.
The new TIC TAC theatrical format aims to create a single “cultural package” to encourage the enjoyment of a theatrical performance together with proposals for leisure activities, identified from the specific offer of each territory (museums, food, walks, etc.). The format includes both indoor (in a single cultural space in the territory) and outdoor activities, so as to enhance the specific offers of the territories.
In addition to the creation of the crossover format, the project also includes the mapping of resources in the 3 territories for leisure and culture, the activation of networking and partnerships with local actors in the territory for inclusion in the format and local and regional promotion.
The Social Community Theatre Centre, in its role as project innovator, supports the theater partners in project governance and monitoring.
In terms of governance, it focuses on the development of new skills through capacity building and networking programs on audience engagement, supports shared cultural planning by enhancing specificities and creating points of contact between three autonomous and active subjects in three different territories, and conducts internal monitoring of partners throughout the project. Regarding project analysis and monitoring, it is responsible for the quali-quantitative surveys of potential and loyal audiences and is the contact person for research on the cultural consumption of families.
