Cartoline di giorno e di notte dal quartiere Aurora (Postcards by Day and by Night from the Aurora District) is an artistic and festive event that revolved aournd sending postcards from the Aurora district of Turin to the world; a project by Spazio BAC, Associazione Filieradarte, and SCT Centre. The project aims to narrate the beauty and vitality of the Aurora district of Turin through photography and Social and Community Theatre, moving beyond the prejudices and problems often associated with it.
Born within the framework of Grandangolo, an initiative funded by the ToNite call and the UIA (Urban Innovative Action) Program to promote inclusion and urban safety, the project actively involved 226 inhabitants of different ages, cultures and backgrounds. Invited to choose their “favorite places” in the neighborhood and to be photographed in them, the citizens involved became the protagonists of the creation of 16 postcards, true works of photographic art that capture the multicultural and dynamic soul of Aurora.
Not just a simple portrait of the neighborhood, but a choral narrative that, through gathering spaces, hidden corners and faces of inhabitants, has revealed a nuanced identity. In addition to the postcards, the project organized a community event with music, dance and theater, creating an opportunity for meeting and exchange and offering citizens a stage to share stories and anecdotes related to the places portrayed. The 1400 postcards printed and the 150 posters displayed throughout the city have thus become messengers of a new and positive image of Aurora, contributing to promote social inclusion and safety, even at night.
Cartoline di giorno e di notte dal quartiere Aurora was divided into several phases, all designed to encourage the active participation of residents and the creation of a truly inclusive community event:
Phase 1: Awareness and engagement (November 2021 – February 2022)
Initially, the project focused on mapping the Aurora district, with the goal of engaging associations, informal groups, and residents in the creative process. Through meetings and opportunities for exchange, dialogue and active participation were fostered, establishing the groundwork for the co-creation of the final event.
Phase 2: Photography workshops and story gathering (February 2022 – May 2022)
The core of the project consisted of the photography workshops, where residents, split into 17 groups, had the opportunity to explore and capture images of their most cherished locations. Each group took part in 3 sessions, during which, besides creating the photographs, they shared stories, anecdotes and thoughts connected to the selected places. These narratives were subsequently gathered and utilized as dramaturgical material for the development of the final event.
Phase 3: Community event and outreach (April 2022 – October 2022)
The Cartoline di giorno e di notte dal quartiere Aurora event, held on May 6 2022, marked the highlight of the project, showcasing the beauty and vibrancy of the neighborhood through music, dance, and community-based theater.
Finally, to further enhance the project’s visibility and spread a positive image of Aurora, the postcards were printed in 150 posters and displayed throughout the city, thanks to the support of the City of Turin and the TO-Nite call for proposals.
The Cartoline di giorno e di notte dal quartiere Aurora project is part of the Grandangolo project, coordinated by Aurora Lab – Politecnico di Torino.
