Workshops and theatrical performances for an innovative approach to teaching mathematics.

From May 10th until October 2021, the theater workshops of the SCT Centre were part of the program of La Bella Stagione (The Beautiful Season), an initiative of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation within the program 2021. Un’estate insieme (A summer together). The activities took place in Spazio BAC, and were designed in particular for the classes of the Provaci Ancora SAM! (Try Again SAM!) and N.O.E. Una Comunità che Educa (An Educating Community) projects, and at children and young people from the summer camps of oratories and organizations that provide summer activities as part of the Estate Ragazzi of the City of Turin. The program offered cultural experiences and opportunities for younger generations to reclaim collective spaces, after months of closures.
which included creative, experiential, discovery, social, and movement activities, also included the theater workshops of the SCT Centre: at Spazio BAC, the appointments of theater workshops took place throughout the summer to explore various themes through the use of expressiveness and creativity.
The workshops offered by the SCT Centre were:
FUORI LA LINGUA (Freeing the Tongue)
A theatrical workshop of linguistic, expressive, and bodily exploration. Through creativity, words were transformed into strange languages and then into a foreign language. From here, playing with English, the possibilities of verbal and non-verbal language were explored. The workshop playfully approached the theme of communication and foreign languages, developing communication skills in a creative process, to discover that knowing how to speak another language is a game of imagination and above all of relationship.
IL PAGURO NON HA PAURA (The hermit crab is not afraid)
A theatrical, physical, expressive, and creative workshop that led the group in exploring the theme of fear and courage. Through the proposed activities, the participants developed self-awareness, the ability to relate effectively with other people, and, playing with theater and emotions, trust and knowledge of their own creative thinking. Through theatrical language, the group immersed itself in a thematic journey reworked through the creative protagonism of the group, to give life together to a “Story” that, by its nature, belongs to us since the dawn of time: Fear and Courage.
NUMERI LIBERI (Free numbers)
A workshop where play, theater, and numbers mixed to create an artistic and educational experience at the same time. Theatre practices allowed the group to delve into the game of mathematics with a creative approach. “Right and wrong” gave way to the pleasure of playing and relating to others, to explore a new world together, exorcise fears, and overcome prejudices about mathematics.
