The project

STEM disciplines are an effective educational tool to enhance equality, promote differences, and develop transversal skills. Among STEM, mathematical competence is now considered one of the most important.
International surveys tell us that, in Italy, the percentage of students who do not reach basic levels in STEM disciplines remains well above the European target of 15%. Studies show that the learning process of mathematics by students, who very often fear the subject, is affected by difficulties concerning text comprehension together with emotional difficulties such as stress, anxiety, and fear.

Integration with other disciplines and active involvement can promote understanding of these. It is therefore necessary to strengthen those educational initiatives aimed at promoting the study of mathematics, and more generally of STEM subjects, to better prepare students for a linear and satisfactory educational career, creating a community educational and cultural proposal.

It is in this context that the project La matematica è per tutt! (Mathematics is for everyone!) was born, with the aim of further involving the neighborhoods and schools located in peripheral areas of the City of Turin. Such as, for example, the Aurora district, home to the promoting cultural center, Spazio BAC, known for its multiculturalism, innovation, but also for significant challenges such as school dropout, family poverty, and obstacles in school integration processes.

The project stems from the previous TIM – Theatre in Mathematics, MatemACT, and Mathemart projects, based on the methodology of Social and Community Theatre for an innovative approach to the subject, which have produced workshops and theatrical lecture-performances on the subject.

Action

La matematica è per tutt! follows this methodology in the organization of annual Mathematics Festivals – the first held in 2024 and the second in 2025.

Each edition of the Festival has featured workshops for boys and girls from Primary and Secondary Schools and repeat performances of the shows Math Scare Boom – Una strana lezione contro il mal di matematica e Contaci! La matematica e le donne.

The project aims to:

  • Implement the offer of cultural innovation within urban peripheral contexts by strengthening the relationship between the school and cultural world to fight educational poverty
  • Promote the teaching of scientific subjects through non-formal techniques and performing arts, primarily theatre
  • Prevent inequalities of access to culture and support non-formal forms of engagement in the study of scientific subjects for all students, particularly those with socio-cultural and economic difficulties
  • Encourage girls’ engagement with scientific subjects to reduce the gender gap through a theatrical approach
