The #IORISPETTO (#IRESPECT) project was funded by AICS and carried out by Cifa Onlus, Amnesty International, SCT Centre | COREP, the Institute for International Economic Cooperation, and the Multiethnic Association of Intercultural Mediators.
Within the project, the SCT Centre team participated in the training of teachers, coordinating the training activity with Amnesty International, ICEI and A.M.M.I (Multicultural Association of Intercultural Mediators) in three cities: Palermo, Albano Laziale and Turin. The training, designed for teachers from all over Italy, involved 90 teachers from primary and lower secondary schools in 3-day residential workshops held in the various cities.
The overall goal of the project was to promote civic awareness and active responsibility among young generations, oriented towards the realization of a more inclusive society.
Targeted objectives:
The training, conducted in a workshop setting, focused on practical life skills for managing conflicts and hate speech situations, with a focus on body awareness, non-verbal communication, stress management, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Utilizing the Social and Community Theatre methodology, the workshops explored various techniques, from theatrical training exercises to role-playing and Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, alternating between physical expression and moments of reflection and sharing.
The teachers’ response, which was very positive, highlighted their enthusiasm and the need for tools to combat stereotypes and prejudices in order to fight hate speech and manage its consequences in the classroom.
The training for teachers was integrated into an educational project also targeting 15 classes in primary and lower secondary schools across the project’s four focus cities: Milan, Turin, Palermo, and Albano Laziale. Each class, guided by trainers and teachers, selected a creative methodology to promote the anti-rumours approach. The techniques explored were wide-ranging: from video-making and creative writing to street art, theater, comics, cooperative games, and even social circus!
The classroom training then extended beyond the schools, with the organization of numerous final events to disseminate the work and discoveries made in the classroom.
#IORISPETTO then proceeded with the publication of a manual to share the tools and activities used in schools and with further interventions on the topic of combating hate speech.
