Since 2005, the Nursing Degree Program at the University of Turin has launched, in collaboration with the SCT Centre | Unito, a continuous project activity of teaching, research and evaluation on theater in the basic training of the professional figure of the nurse with the implementation of workshops for students, shows, conferences. The educational objective for the nursing profession to acquire effective relationship and communication skills with the patient and with the professional team has led over the years to address various issues, such as the body and corporeity, the care relationship, interprofessionalism and discrimination in healthcare.
A scientific quali-quantitative evaluation has been underway since 2006, conducted by the Nursing Degree Program in collaboration with the Department of Humanistic Studies and the School of Medicine – Department of Public and Pediatric Health Sciences of Turin and with the Professional Educator degree program, which highlights the positive impact of the theatrical experience on the training of students, promoting greater awareness of the potential and limitations of their own body and a critical reflection on their personal and professional experiences.
The project is designed for students of the Nursing Degree Programs in Turin, Cuneo and Ivrea. With the aim of working on interprofessionalism, since 2009 it has been extended to the Professional Education Degree Programs and, more recently, to Medicine and Obstetrics (see the Co-Health project).
Main goals of the proposed theater programs:
The SCT methodology, with the format of the intensive theater workshop, is used in these training courses with particular attention to three levels of exploration, awareness and learning: a) corporeity, b) the tuned and cooperative relationship, c) the cultural and symbolic dimension implicit in the action. These practices refer to the choral theater training of the twentieth century combined with other mixed somatic and creative techniques. Stimuli to a conscious relationship with one’s body through mixed techniques (breathing, movement, qi gong, yoga) and specific theatrical techniques for the body in space and in action; group theater training practices with theatrical games on couple and group work combined with improvisation and role playing; narratives, creative reuse of objects and professional “costumes”, writing of theatrical texts, staging.
The events, intended for the entire community of the health and education area, are the result of the theater workshops. The theatrical performances featured the students who had participated in the workshops together with professional actors.
QUALITATIVE RESULTS
The projects carried out in recent years have always included the definition of a measurable system for detecting the training effects for the different actions/recipients and an evaluation of the perception of the experience by the participants. To this end, a multidisciplinary group was formed, composed of trainers from the Nursing Degree Program, professors from the Master’s in Social and Community Theater, university professors and researchers from the Departments of Humanistic Studies and Public and Pediatric Health Sciences, committed to the design of suitable tools for the quali-quantitative evaluation of the effects of theatrical interventions: observation grids used during the workshop as self and hetero-evaluation, pre-post focus groups, pre-post simulated tests/role playing, emotional reflective diaries.
In general, the results obtained from the various tools and techniques have led to the recognition of a strong convergence between theater and training in the care relationship. The theater workshop represents for participants a space for critical re-elaboration of their experiences, stimulates awareness of their potential and their limits, and acts as a bridge between personal experience and professional reality. Theater has therefore proven capable of creating the ideal conditions to address complex issues that require strong personal involvement. The group interaction has also allowed students to understand that their point of view is not the only one and to discover that they can be able to see through the eyes of other people, whether they are patients or professionals.
The project is promoted by the Nursing Degree Program of the University of Turin, the Social and Community Theatre Centre | Unito (formerly Master TSC) in collaboration with the Department of Humanistic Studies and the School of Medicine – Department of Public and Pediatric Health Sciences of Turin.
The “Come mi senti. Il teatro per la cura delle discriminazioni” project, supported and funded by the European Social Fund, also collaborated with the InPrESA association (Initiatives for Health Education and Promotion) and DoRS (Regional Documentation Center for Health Promotion).
The 2013-2015 project “Co-Health. Il teatro nella formazione del personale sanitario. Ricerca e innovazione nei modelli di formazione e di valutazione”, was co-financed by the Cassa di Risparmio di Torino Foundation.
