A new creative and playful way to approach mathematics, trying to overcome the fear that the subject can generate.

The project

Mathematical struggles are frequently not a reflection of a student’s cognitive abilities but are instead deeply intertwined with the anxiety that the subject can evoke, which in turn impairs normal cognitive function. Mathemart is an educational approach that utilizes the theatrical workshop to enable students to engage with mathematics in a fun and imaginative setting while consistently prioritizing the learning objective.

Mathemart is an innovative approach to mathematics created by Maurizio Bertolini in 2011: it consists of teaching mathematics using the methodology of Social and Community Theater. Teachers are always looking for new teaching methodologies, and Mathemart was designed as a new way to approach mathematics, trying to overcome the fear that the subject can generate.

The Social and Community Theater methodology was employed to engage with mathematics in a playful way, using an approach that involves mind and body, creativity, and active participation.

When students are afraid of mathematics, they lose the freedom to make mistakes: fear paralyzes the brain and its logical functions, hindering their ability to reason effectively. However, this doesn’t reflect their true potential. The theatrical environment cultivated an atmosphere of trust, creativity, and fun, enabling participants to explore the activities without judgment, thus fostering learning. With Mathemart, the focus isn’t on discussing mathematics but on experiencing it firsthand by engaging with mathematical rules and relationships in a playful way. Formalization of a concept only occurs after it has been experienced.

Action

Mathemart has been tested in Italian primary and lower secondary schools since 2011. In particular, it was tested in 7 secondary school classes with approximately 150 students between the ages of 11 and 14. Each class took part in cycles of 10-15 one-hour meetings.

The most significant outcomes acknowledged by the teachers are:

  • Mathemart was useful for explaining topics that were not understood during regular lessons;
  • New topics explained first using the Mathemart method and then taken up again in class with a regular lesson were understood more easily;
  • Students who are usually afraid of mathematics felt comfortable during the Mathemart workshop, actively participating in the activities;
  • All classes showed great engagement and enjoyment in participating in the workshop;
  • The teachers expressed interest in continuing to use Mathemart.
