Over 3,500 people in the audience, 520 residents who actively participated in the preparation of the activities, 75 artists and professionals active in the territory, 18 associations involved, 8 major events of spectacle, culture and good relations, 1 unique traveling stage.
Caravan Italia is a Social and Community Theatre project that originates in the context of the broader European project Caravan Artists on the Road. Caravan Italia is a special Italian tour of Caravan which, between August 15 and November 4, 2012, crossed the country from north to south. The project involved 4 Italian cities through Community Theatre paths with the inhabitants, on the theme “Rebirth from Crisis”.
The project is directed by Teatro Popolare Europeo, with the supervision of the SCT Centre | Unito, is promoted by Fondazione CRT, is supported by Fondazione con il Sud and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di La Spezia and saw the direct involvement of ACRI – Associazione Casse di Risparmio Italiane. In particular, the activities of Caravan Italia were carried out and organized by, in addition to the Teatro Popolare Europeo Association, the Labulè association, the Il Pozzo dei Due Draghi association, Cinecirolo PG Frassati, Casa Babylon Teatro, the Per Partito Preso group, the Etérnit association.
The Caravan. The project’s itinerant symbol is a traveling stage: the Caravan is a cutting-edge multimodal structure; a work that has the ability to transform into a theatrical stage, open-air cinema, location for exhibitions, digital platform.
In each of the cities involved in the project, Caravan went to meet those places, groups and people who are today rising from the crisis or who constitute a strong nucleus that resists the disintegration not only economic, but also contemporary social and cultural, encountering the stories of the population and organizing major Community Theatre events to strengthen the sense of social connection between those places and their territory of belonging.
The communities were not merely recipients, but co-authors and co-actors of the artistic creation, to facilitate social valorization processes. The stage for these artistic and community paths were the cities, neighborhoods, markets and courtyards and, together, the homes of residents, youth groups, hospitals, multi-purpose centers, homes for the elderly, etc.
In particular, the collaboration with local theater associations was fundamental for the success of the interventions. The continuity of the experience is handed over to the local associations that prepared the activities in collaboration with the Caravan team.
In each city, the show Precipito (I’m falling) was presented, directed by Alessandra Rossi Ghiglione, the story of 3 young Italians trying to get out of the crisis and a suicidal entrepreneur who returns as a ghost to guide and accompany them. The show was written from the collection of hundreds of true stories of young people living in today’s Italy.
In La Spezia, in collaboration with the Labulè association and with the active collaboration of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di La Spezia, the intervention focused on an area of the city: Piazza Brin and the surrounding neighborhood. The square is considered a place of marginalization, and is a meeting place for humanity: residents from South America and North Africa, elderly people, homeless people, owners of historic shops. Piazza Brin, with the active participation of the citizens, becomes the protagonist of a week of Community Theatre events open to the entire community.
In San Giovanni Rotondo, in collaboration with Il Pozzo dei Due Draghi and Cinecircolo PG Frassati, a large community parade was prepared, the Minestrone Parade with 200 residents parading among children, horses and riders, local associations, elderly people, led by a 25-piece band and followed by a large audience. From door to door, vegetables were collected with which the group of Caravan artists prepared a special community minestrone.
In Pagani, in collaboration with Casa Babylon Teatro and the Per Partito Preso association, the event was dedicated to building the identity of a city wounded by the receivership for mafia infiltration of its municipality. The event, which involved many associations including Libera and a diverse audience, was a strong “yes” to the desire for freedom, cohesion and solidarity of the town with the expression on stage of many local groups.
In the week of Mondragone, in collaboration with Etérnit, with the participation of numerous local realities and the patronage of the Municipality of Mondragone, Caravan gave rise to a real experiment of “community that makes theater” which involved residents, associations and artists. Shows, open rehearsals, meetings, and other activities that then flowed into a final performance directed by Luigi Morra with the group of Etérnit and Teatro Popolare Europeo artists, in which images and stories of a territory became the true protagonists of the staging.
